Student credit cards: Taking the plunge

The thing students most look forward to when they turn 18 is that they can now own a credit card.Little do the poor devils know what’s coming at them.

The best friend of credit card companies is temptation. All sorts of temptation ranging from alchohol to branded clothes , from mobiles to laptops and so on.And temptation nowadays is omnipresent.Even online there are several avenues to spend money that is not really yours.Students seem more than happy to splurge. The ready availability of cards , the ease of their use and the fact that they can pay only minimum payments leads to enormous mindless spending. Many students tell themselves that they can always work a little harder at the gas station or the convenience store and make up.Few know anything about the workings of their card.Just the other day I asked my nephew what interest rate he was being charged by his card. His reply was ‘Huh, what do you mean? I have a credit limit of $600 and that’s all that matters to me’.

Many students have the feel-safe feeling that their parents will bail them out , if there is financial trouble, the problem is who is going to bail the parents out?The best thing about credit cards is their universal acceptance, especially if it is a Visa or Master card, and in emergencies they are your best friend.Take these two salient features away and the rest is all murky.Ask any CPA or financial analyst or even better ask a student who has recently filed for bankruptcy.

The chief culprit that leads to students spending like this is ignorance.Parents and guardians should take it upon themselves to educate children from an early age about the way credit card companies work. The solution is not avoidance of these cards but a thorough understanding of their systems , so then can be used for individual benefit. Many cards have no annual fee, others provide free insurance when you rent a car , then there are the frequent flier schemes and the universal interest free period for a purchase made.

I also think that countries with societies afflicted by credit card debts should have legislations in place that control indiscriminate and irresponsible doling out of credit cards by companies. Also the fine print should be clearly explained to the customers. There is no doubt in my mind that if the credit card companies employ debt counsellors ,it will benefit them in the long run.Again the Credit Card is not the evil here but the ignorance of its use.

Nowadays even colleges that allow credit cards to be given out on campuses should hold workshops on debt prevention and Efficient Credit card management. We may not be able to curb the compulsives but we can atleast save those Alices in Financial wonderland who mean to use the card well.
